💰McKinney Pulled in $325 Million in Visitor Spending Last Year - and It's Not Slowing Down
Visit McKinney shared its 2025 year-in-review with City Council on June 2, and the numbers show tourism is becoming a major economic driver for the city. Visitors spent $325 million in McKinney last year, supporting more than 2,000 local jobs and generating $34.9 million in tax revenue. City staff noted that without visitor spending, residents would need to contribute more than $1,300 each to replace that economic impact.
Hotels continue to be one of the clearest signs of growth. McKinney posted a 70.9% hotel occupancy rate in 2025 - the highest in Collin County - while hotel occupancy tax collections surpassed the previous record of $3.4 million. On many weekends, Friday and Saturday occupancy exceeds 90%.
Sports tourism played a major role. The city hosted another NCAA Division II National Football Championship, which generated nearly 600 hotel room nights, and secured a new contract to keep the event in McKinney. The International Girls Cup brought 115 teams and 789 room nights, while the city’s first Professional Pickleball Association event attracted more than 11,000 attendees. Established events like the CJ Cup and Drum Corps International also continued to draw visitors.
The bigger picture is a city that has quietly built a strong hospitality economy, where major events, packed hotels, and activity on the Square all work together to bring outside dollars into McKinney. Source: City Council Work Session, June 2, 2026 - Visit McKinney 2025 Year in Review presentation

🏛️ The Square
🏗️ Former Globe Life Campus To Become McKinney's Next Big Thing
The former Globe Life campus near Custer/Eldorado got council approval to rezone 14.5 acres to multi-family. The applicant is planning to turn the entire campus - a large underused office property - into a mixed-use development with multifamily, 300,780 sq ft of existing office, and ~10 acres of retail. Roughly twice the footprint of District 121, this $70M redevelopment could be one of the most significant private projects the city has seen in years. Both P&Z and council approved unanimously. 💰 City Reviewing Property Tax Exemptions for Seniors and Disabled Residents
CFO Mark Holloway presented McKinney's annual review of property tax exemption options for over-65 and disabled homeowners. The current exemption is $90,000 off assessed value - worth about $371 per year in reduced taxes at the current rate. The city's total assessed roll is down 2.81% this year, which means the fixed dollar exemption is proportionally more valuable than last year without changing anything. Council indicated no appetite to push the overall tax rate upward. No decision was made - further discussion expected through June ahead of the budget cycle. 🏗️ A Downtown Parking Garage Is Getting Real
McKinney staff unveiled 12 design concepts for a new downtown parking garage during the June 2 Work Session. The proposed structure would sit west of Kentucky Street and south of Hunt Street, with options ranging from about 400 to 613 spaces. Estimated costs range from $54K to $97K per parking space, with Concept Three identified as the most cost-effective. Some designs include ground-floor retail, while others focus solely on parking. No vote was taken, but council provided direction for the next design phase. The former City Hall and Development Services building next door is also being eyed for future commercial redevelopment. 🌳 Park of the Week: Old Settler's Park
One of McKinney's most-used parks and somehow still underrated - Old Settler's sits on 100+ acres with a full recreation center, outdoor pool, tennis and basketball courts, baseball fields, walking trails, and direct access to the Wilson Creek Trail corridor. It's the kind of park that works for a morning run, a family afternoon, or a pickup game.
Worth noting this week: the goatscaping project starts nearby on the Wilson Creek Trail, which runs right through the park's trail network. Walk east toward Towne Lake this week and you might catch the goats at work.
