🏗️ Downtown Parking Garage Plans Hit Pause
Downtown McKinney's long-discussed parking garage is taking a brief detour.
City leaders have decided to pause plans for a new City Hall and downtown parking garage until they have a clearer picture of how the former City Hall and Development Services properties will ultimately be redeveloped. Rather than locking in the garage's location now, officials want future commercial development to help determine the best fit.
For downtown visitors, it means the city is prioritizing getting the bigger picture right before pouring concrete. With redevelopment of these key blocks expected to reshape the heart of downtown, the eventual parking solution could end up serving businesses, residents, and visitors much better in the long run.

McKinney During The Great Depression
During the Great Depression, McKinney, Texas, transitioned from a booming agricultural hub to a struggling town. Plagued by collapsing cotton prices and the Dust Bowl, the county population declined, forcing farms to consolidate. Despite the hardship, local businesses on the town square survived through stubborn resilience.
The economic downturn reshaped the city in several key ways:
Agricultural Decline: McKinney’s historical identity as a major center for cotton farming suffered severely. Falling demand and ecological ruin forced many families off the land, leading to a population decline that Collin County felt for the next 40 years.
Industrial Adaptation: Despite widespread closures, new businesses still managed to establish roots. The Crystal Ice Company opened on East Louisiana Street during the decade, merging with Southland Ice to supply the region.
Cultural Shifts: The era saw major changes in entertainment and community. The famous jazz group McKinney's Cotton Pickers were forced to disband in 1934 due to an inability to tour and make money. Additionally, membership in local fraternal organizations, such as the Woodmen, saw significant drop-offs.
