📰 New Event Space With a View in Downtown McKinney

Exciting news for McKinney's event scene: a new venue opens downtown in August. Unique is that it has Downtown McKinney’s only second-story balcony - a 750-square-foot outdoor oasis offering breathtaking, panoramic views of the historic district.

What was once a rundown building considered unfit for use has been completely reimagined by owners Ben and Alycia into a stunning modern space, still fitting in with its neighboring historic brick buildings.

‘‘We wanted to create a space worthy of McKinney's energy - somewhere people could celebrate above the city they love, surrounded by the skyline that makes this town so special.’’ - Ben & Alycia, Owners of The Chestnut Hall

Located in the heart of downtown at 103 S. Chestnut Street - the corner of Louisiana and Chestnut - the 3,000-square-foot event venue handles up to 100-120 guests, with high-end finishes, a built-in bar, a full prep kitchen, and elevator access throughout.

Local chef dinners and live music events are coming up. Stay tuned until the August opening with their mailing list at TheChestnutHall.com.

🏡 Hugs Café Just Got $683K to Grow

Hugs Café - McKinney's beloved nonprofit café and greenhouse that employs adults with intellectual disabilities - received a $683,467 project grant at Thursday's MCDC board meeting for a significant expansion of their Hugs Greenhouse at 1151 East Cottage Hill Pkwy. The approved investment covers three new greenhouses, a new propagation house, an entry gate and security system, a new driveway, heaters in the work barn, irrigation, a propane tank, and a relocated septic system. The grant covers 58.6% of the total project cost - meaning Hugs raised the rest themselves.

📚 Roy & Helen Hall Library Planetarium Is Heading Toward a Grand Reopening

At the same MCDC meeting, the McKinney Public Library Foundation submitted a promotional grant application specifically to fund advertising for the grand reopening of the Roy and Helen Hall Library and Planetarium. No public date has been set yet - but MCDC fielding a marketing grant for the event means it has moved from plans to reality. Keep an eye out for an announcement.

🌳 Park of the Week: Erwin Park

If 96°F makes you want to stay inside, Erwin Park is the counter-argument. At 212 acres of dense wooded terrain east of downtown, the tree canopy keeps temperatures noticeably cooler than open parks - and the trails are demanding enough that you actually feel like you've been outside, not just walked around a parking lot.

The main draws are mountain biking trails and hiking paths winding through the woods, along with creek access and picnic areas scattered through the property. It's not a splash-pad neighborhood park - it's actual trail terrain, and you can get genuinely turned around in there if you wander without paying attention. Bring water, wear real shoes, and bring a fully charged phone.

Accessible from FM 1461 or County Road 76. No entrance fee.

Erwin Park - 6200 County Road 76, McKinney, TX 75070
