🛤️ McKinney May Move Its Downtown Train Tracks. Here's Why That Matters.
Most McKinney residents have crossed them without a second thought - the freight rail tracks that run between Virginia Street and Broad Street in the middle of Historic Downtown. They've been there for over a century, shaping what can and can't be built in the core of the city.
At the June 16 City Council meeting, council voted to apply for a planning grant to study relocating those tracks to north of US 380 (also called East University Drive), roughly two miles from the center of downtown. This isn't a construction announcement - it's a "project planning and development" grant, meaning it would fund the engineering studies needed to figure out whether and how a relocation is even possible.
But the intent is meaningful. Freight rail tracks in the middle of a downtown don't just take up physical space - they limit what can be built around them, create a barrier for pedestrians, and put a hard cap on what the blocks between Virginia and Broad can become. Moving them north of US 380 would free up that corridor for development that isn't possible today. Think: walkable street frontage where a rail siding currently sits.
Nothing's happening overnight. Grant applications and rail relocation projects take years. But Monday's vote is the first formal signal that McKinney is seriously thinking about what its downtown looks like without those tracks running through it. 🎪 Save The Date - 4th of July
🎆 Red, White, and Boom
McKinney's July 4th is bigger than most people realize. The day starts with a hometown parade and block party in Historic Downtown from 10AM to 2PM - get there early for a good spot along the route. Then that evening, Towne Lake Park hosts an outdoor concert, a drone show, and fireworks from 6 to 10PM. That's a full-day holiday, not just fireworks.

🏆 Rick Franklin Named Pro Tem Mayor
The McKinney City Council voted unanimously at the June 16 meeting to elect Councilmember Rick Franklin as Mayor Pro Tempore - that's the official title for the council member who steps in and leads meetings whenever the Mayor isn't available. It's one of the most visible leadership roles on the council.

💨 McKinney Is Exploring New Rules for Vape and Smoke Shops
Right now, vape shops in McKinney are treated exactly like any other retail store - they can open in most commercial and industrial zones, no special permit required. At a June 16 work session, city staff presented council with a menu of options for creating vape-shop-specific rules for the first time. The options on the table: defining vape shops as their own type of land use (separate from general retail), requiring a Specific Use Permit (a city-approval process before they can open), distance requirements keeping shops away from schools and daycares, and a dedicated business license. Nearby cities have already moved: Allen passed rules in 2024 requiring shops to stay 300 feet from schools and 1,000 feet from each other; Frisco adopted distance requirements in February 2026. One councilmember raised concerns about shops selling illegal substances and floated the idea of random drug-sniffing dog inspections. No final vote - council asked staff to come back with more detail. (Source: McKinney City Council Work Session, June 16, 2026)

🌳 Park of the Week: Monarch Gardens Park
Monarch Gardens Park in southwest McKinney is named for the monarch butterfly - those bright orange-and-black ones that migrate through Texas every fall on their way to Mexico. Milkweed is the only plant monarch caterpillars can eat, and native plantings that support pollinators are exactly what makes a "monarch garden" different from a regular park.
McKinney has leaned into this through its "Unique by Nature" identity, and small parks like this are where that actually shows up: native plants, pollinator habitat, garden beds designed to attract rather than just look tidy.
The park itself is a small neighborhood green space near W Eldorado Pkwy in west McKinney. Think less "destination park" and more "the park the blocks around it actually use." Earlier this year, a community volunteer workday brought neighbors out to weed and mulch the garden beds - the kind of maintenance that keeps a pollinator garden functioning, not just decorating.
Local artist Andrea Holmes added a new mural to the space, giving it a visual anchor that makes it feel cared for. It's not the biggest park in McKinney, but it's the most intentional small one on my radar right now. Worth a morning walk this Sunday before the 95°F heat locks in. (Source: City of McKinney Parks)
