McKinney's Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) took a significant step forward on Tuesday, asking the City Council for formal direction on a deal that could bring 400,000+ square feet of Class A office space to District 121. The MEDC owns land in the mixed-use hub near Town and Country Blvd. and US-121 and has been positioning it for high-value office development.

This is how these deals move in McKinney: the MEDC presents to Council, requests direction, then advances negotiations with the developer. "Direction requested" means the deal is real enough to need a green light. If it advances, a major corporate office campus would join a corridor already on track to get Cannon Beach surf resort (2027), the Venu amphitheater (2027), and 121 Commerce Park - more than 750,000 SF of industrial space from VanTrust.

The backdrop: McKinney and Allen launched a joint brand called 121 North in May (121northtx.com) to attract corporate tenants to their shared stretch of SH-121. The MEDC has been punching above their weight on pipeline development this year - 96 business retention and expansion visits logged against an annual goal of 80.

The MEDC also unveiled a new 3-5 year strategic plan at Tuesday's session, with an outside consulting firm engaged to identify target industries, assess the talent pipeline, and build a competitive recruitment roadmap. City Council approved the rezoning of roughly 1 acre at 8301 W. University Drive from Agricultural to Local Commercial. Small parcel, big corridor - another signal that the US-380 stretch is moving from farmland to something denser. (Source: City of McKinney Newsletter, July 23, 2026)

McKinney's own airport (DTX) is opening a brand-new 46,000-sq-ft passenger terminal on November 11, 2026. Avelo Airlines will fly nonstop to Las Vegas, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando, and Tampa - from a facility with four boarding gates, centralized food & beverage, and 980-space parking.

The city is already running an RFP for terminal Food & Beverage concessions, which means the airport food situation will actually be sorted by the time the doors open. McKinney is going places.

With 103°F on the forecast for Friday and a heat index pushing 112°F, the best park in McKinney this weekend is whichever one has a free splash pad. That's Finch Park.

Finch Park is a neighborhood park in central McKinney with restrooms, a playground, and a splash pad that runs 8AM to 10PM daily through October 1. On a weekend this hot, "park of the week" really means "place where the kids can be outside without you both regretting it."
