On August 4, nonprofit leaders and community officials gathered near the corner of Redbud Boulevard and White Avenue in McKinney for the groundbreaking of the Collin County NeighborHub - a 40,000-square-foot shared facility that will house up to 18 nonprofits under one roof, each serving a distinct need, designed so that anyone who walks in for help with one thing gets connected to everything else they might need. Services include medical aid, legal aid, showers for the homeless, food aid and more.

Catholic Charities Dallas is the managing partner. Seven founding nonprofits have already committed: Mission Regan, Neighbors Nourishing Neighbors, One Heart McKinney, Sanchez Charities, St. Vincent de Paul North Texas, Streetside Showers, and The MedBridge. "So many more services are yet to come," said Catholic Charities Dallas President and CEO David Woodyard. "We filled the first floor. The second floor is waiting for those to join us."

The McKinney Community Development Corporation invested $1.7 million in the project, which is projected to serve more than 12,000 individuals in its first year and over 28,600 by year five. Construction takes about a year, with the facility opening in summer 2027. Nonprofit partners pay below-market rent for space inside.

The project was championed by Martin and Kim Sanchez of Sanchez Charities, who pursued both the zoning approval and the MCDC funding. MCDC chairperson George Fuller said it best: "Every once in a while there's a project measured not in size or dollars, but in lives that will be changed. Today is one of those great days." Hundreds of classic and custom cars roll into the historic downtown square for a free morning cruise-in. Grab coffee from a nearby shop and walk the rows for a couple of hours - this is the kind of laid-back Saturday McKinney does well, and it costs nothing to show up.

McKinney has issued 99 building permits for industrial projects since 2020 - a 153% jump from the prior five-year period - totaling more than $1.1 billion in construction value. The names include Lite-On Technology Corp. ($919M, 600+ jobs expected), Encore Wire ($250M expansion), and CapRock Partners' McKinney Air Business Park. McKinney National Airport's new commercial terminal - opening in November - acts as the anchor for more to come.

Demolition work inside the McKinney Performing Arts Center is nearly complete as the city continues renovating the historic downtown venue. No reopening date confirmed yet, but progress is visible.

McKinney's newest luxury apartment community just opened at 2650 S. McDonald St. - steps from Medical City McKinney. One-, two-, and three-bedroom units with a resort pool, fitness center, and pet-friendly living. Ribbon cutting was August 6.

The Heard Natural Science Museum sits on 289 acres of Blackland Prairie off Bois D'Arc Road in McKinney - with 1.5 miles of paved trails, natural unpaved paths, a raptor aviary, native plant gardens, and a butterfly house open year-round.

Inside, there are two floors of natural science exhibits, live animals, and rotating programming. The trails are open daily even when the building is closed - but on a stormy Saturday, the museum gives you a solid plan B. Kids under 3 get in free.
