At a City Council meeting Tuesday (Aug 18), the city reviewed the feasibility study results for what's being called "APEX North" - a second multi-generational recreation center built on 110 acres purchased from McKinney ISD for $19 million total.

The facility will include an indoor heated competition pool, an indoor/outdoor leisure pool, play areas, party rooms, a multi-floor fitness hub, a full gymnasium with basketball courts, and an indoor track. If you use the existing APEX Centre on the south side, picture that - but designed specifically to serve the rapidly growing north end of the city.

The timeline is locked in: final plans must be ready by August 31, 2027, and the facility must be complete by August 1, 2030. This is a real commitment, not a study that gets shelved.

Most people know the Heard as a museum - but 289 acres of preserved Texas landscape makes it one of the best parks in Collin County, and it deserves to be treated that way.

The trail network covers 7+ miles through bottomland hardwood forest, open grassland, and wetland habitats. An early morning walk in August is actually manageable in the shaded creek corridors - pack water, go before 9AM, and you'll see why the Heard has a loyal repeat visitor base. Turtles sunning on logs, great blue herons wading in the water, white-tailed deer in the clearings.

Inside the nature center you'll find native reptile and amphibian exhibits, live animal displays, and a rotating educational gallery. The grounds also include a butterfly and hummingbird garden and a nature playground for kids.

Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 9AM-5PM, Sunday 12-5PM. Admission $14 adults / $12 members / $10 ages 3-12. Parking free.
