🏘️ National Night Out Is October 6 - Here’s How It Works

National Night Out has been a McKinney tradition for years, but a lot of residents don’t realize how it actually works - or that they can host their own block event and have the city help them do it.
The annual community event takes place on Tuesday, October 6 this year. The concept is simple: neighborhoods across McKinney organize their own gatherings - block parties, cookouts, front-yard hangs - and McKinney Police Department officers, firefighters, and other first responders make rounds to stop in and meet residents face to face. It’s one of the few city programs where the point is just to get neighbors talking to each other and to the people who serve the community.
Registered neighborhood events get visited by first responders throughout the evening. The city coordinates the routes based on which neighborhoods sign up - so the more events that register, the more the city spreads its coverage across McKinney. If your street doesn’t have anything planned, this is a low-effort way to start something: even a dozen neighbors on someone’s driveway counts. Register your neighborhood event or find one near you at mckinneytexas.org/nno. (Source: City of McKinney, September 26, 2026)

⌛ MacTown History

McKinney’s Water Towers 💧
If you’ve driven through older parts of McKinney, you’ve seen the standpipe water tower on Chestnut Street - tall, utilitarian, quietly iconic. What most people don’t know is that McKinney’s water tower history is a story about growth, civic ambition, and what a town does when it decides it wants to become a real city.
McKinney built its first municipal water system in the early 1900s, relying on elevated storage tanks to maintain pressure across a growing grid of pipes and hydrants. The standpipe on Chestnut Street was one of the earliest physical markers of that infrastructure investment - a signal that the city had stopped thinking of itself as a small Texas town and started planning for something bigger. Elevated water storage is unglamorous engineering, but it’s also one of the most visible commitments a city makes: we are going to grow, and we are going to have the infrastructure to handle it.
The Chestnut Street tower has been photographed, painted, and referenced in local art enough times that it’s become one of McKinney’s unofficial visual symbols - appearing on city maps, murals, and merchandise around downtown. It stands roughly a block from where the Historic Downtown Square’s foot traffic concentrated for most of the 20th century. A quiet witness to about 120 years of McKinney becoming McKinney.
The system has grown considerably since then. McKinney now operates a water infrastructure serving one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas, fed primarily through the North Texas Municipal Water District. The utility rate increase taking effect this Thursday is part of the same long arc: growing city, growing system, growing costs. The standpipe on Chestnut Street just keeps standing there, watching it all happen.
