ποΈ McKinney Locks In Plans for a 300-Acre Regional Sports Park
McKinney is officially in the game. At its October 20 regular meeting, City Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with HD Sports & Hospitality LLC and engineering firm Parkhill, Smith & Cooper - the first formal step toward developing a 300-acre regional sports park on city-owned land in northwest McKinney.
The same meeting approved a $1 million preliminary design contract to begin the master planning process, which is expected to take 9-12 months before a full Master Development Agreement is signed.
The land has been city-owned since 2021, and a Letter of Intent with HD Sports was signed in April 2026. The vision: a destination-scale complex featuring sports fields, retail, restaurants, entertainment, and mixed-use development - modeled on the 400-acre Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana, which hosts 26 baseball/softball fields and 32 soccer fields and draws teams from across the country.
Assistant City Manager Trevor Minyard presented the item to Council. HD Sports representative Kyle Lafferty told the council: "McKinney's park will be an epic park."

β³ MacTown History
From Cotton Fields to Championship Fields π
McKinney's relationship with organized sports goes back further than most people realize. In the early 1900s, when McKinney was still a cotton market town, amateur baseball was one of the primary forms of community entertainment across North Texas. Local business leagues and town teams competed on open fields at the edges of town, drawing crowds on Sunday afternoons. The sport was informal by today's standards - no uniforms, no scoreboards - but the social role it played was serious. Showing up for the game meant showing up for your neighbors.
By the mid-20th century, as McKinney grew from a small county seat into a regional hub, youth athletics began to take shape through the school district and the parks department. Little League fields appeared in city parks. The high school football program at McKinney High became a point of civic pride, with Friday night games functioning as community gatherings as much as athletic contests. McKinney's Erwin Park - opened in 1960 and still operating today as one of the oldest continuously operating multi-use parks in Collin County - became one of the early anchors for organized outdoor recreation in the area.
The 300-acre regional sports park now in planning continues that tradition at a completely different scale. Where McKinney's early sports infrastructure was built for local teams playing local games, the new complex is designed to draw tournaments and competitions from across the country - following the model of destination sports parks like Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. The cotton fields are long gone. The instinct to build something worth gathering around is exactly the same.
