McKinney City Council approved a $13,739 Promotional and Community Event Grant for the Art Club of McKinney - covering the production of a McKinney Arts Documentary Film, advertising and marketing for the film and the Art Club's 2026-2027 events season.

A local arts organization is making a full-length documentary about McKinney. That's the kind of thing that sounds inevitable once someone says it, and then you realize nobody had done it yet. The Art Club of McKinney has been part of the city's creative fabric since 1936 - 90 years of local artists, exhibitions, workshops, and community programming - so if any organization was going to tell the story of art's role in shaping McKinney, it makes sense that it's them.

The council also approved a $12,000 grant at the same meeting for the Millhouse Foundation for advertising and marketing of the 2026-2027 Atrium Gallery exhibits at the Cotton Mill. The Atrium Gallery inside the historic Cotton Mill has been quietly building a serious gallery program since Millhouse opened - this funding helps push that programming in front of more people.

Council also approved two resolutions authorizing the city manager to enter professional contracts for a School Resource Officer program - one with McKinney ISD and one with Frisco ISD. SRO programs place uniformed officers inside schools to support safety and build community relationships between law enforcement and students.

McKinney's Safe Streets action plan - focused on eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries on city roads - is open for public comment until September 13. The draft identifies priority corridors and improvement strategies based on crash data and community input. Gabe Nesbitt sits at 200+ acres in south McKinney with an aquatic center, a dog park, sports fields, playgrounds, a disc golf course, and trails connecting the park to the broader McKinney trail system. The outdoor pool is the main draw right now - peak September heat means this park is doing serious civic work.

It also has covered pavilion space and shaded seating throughout, which matters a lot when the high is 99°F. A genuinely well-rounded park for a city that's been building them at a serious pace.
